Colorado, Wyoming dig out from spring snowstorm

The current river levels as of 10:45 a.m. ET in the Central and Northern Plains

And driving conditions? "The roads are bad", said one South Dakota sheriff's department spokesman. "We can't get in to get any food or anything but we have plenty with us". "But.it's worth repeating. Stay safe out there!"

Meteorologist Michael Guy said metro Denver is now out of the warning area.

Portions of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota, as of April 10, are under blizzard warnings, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). But it's likely that at least a foot of snow will cover parts of South Dakota, northern Nebraska and southwest and central Minnesota, according to predictions.

The storm, named Wesley by The Weather Channel, brought unsafe winds, heavy snowfalls, hail risk, downed powerlines, flooding and even thunderstorms and tornado warnings in some areas.

The storm knocked out power Wednesday to thousands of homes and businesses in South Dakota, disrupted air and ground travel from Colorado to Minnesota, and threatened to swell rivers in the Midwest that flooded after March's drenching.

But while the storm did not bomb out by definition, Guy said, it was still extremely powerful and produced wind gusts in excess of hurricane strength. Parts of Nebraska were buried in more than a foot of snow (30.5 centimeters) and even deeper drifts, thanks to winds gusting to more than 60 miles per hour (96.6 kph). More than $3 billion in damage was done to property and crops in Nebraska and Iowa alone.

In some states, getting from one point to another will be a nightmare.

Dubbed "Wesley" by the National Weather Service (NWS), the blizzard affected 4,600 square km and 20 million people in a dozen central USA states, hitting the region with winds up to 60 miles per hour, two feet (60 cm) of snow, and dramatic temperature drops.

"Roads are becoming impassable".

"Roads are becoming impassable", the National Weather Service said. "Dangerous travel conditions are expected". The Minnesota State Patrol responded to 213 crashes by early evening Wednesday. Of those, 33 involved injuries, authorities tweeted.

Tim Walz declared a state of emergency in 64 counties and three tribal nations, authorizing the National Guard to provide emergency aid to those dealing with the storm or flooding, including residents in Oslo where the Red River continued to rise.

Just this week, Denver was basking in springlike conditions with 78 degrees Tuesday, a near-record high for that date.

Whiteout conditions were reported Wednesday night northeast of Denver to the Nebraska state line, Colorado Public Radio reported. Many school districts in Colorado and Wyoming canceled or shortened classes.

The snowfall could lead to additional flooding in the region.

Snow alerts are still in effect Friday for Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and MI. The Red River is now flooding in some areas, and the extra precipitation likely will exacerbate that.
