Intel Abandons 5G Modem Development For Phones Following Apple And Qualcomm Truce

Qualcomm and Apple Settle Long-Running Patent Royalty Dispute

As opening statements were beginning in the San Diego federal trial of a long-standing patent dispute, technology giants Apple and Qualcomm announced a worldwide legal settlement Tuesday, along with a six-year licensing agreement.

Yesterday, Apple and Qualcomm kicked off a massive court case certain to range for years across their respective businesses. A multi-year chipset supply agreement is also part of the settlement.

Qualcomm stock rose more than 20% on the news, while Apple stock was flat.

Apple had accused Qualcomm of using illegal patent practices to keep a monopoly on modem chips that connect phones to mobile data networks. Apple had also tapped Intel to supply the modems in the first 5G-compatible iPhone model, and despite reports of friction between the companies, Intel said earlier this month that it was on track to meet Apple's supply demands. In 2016, Apple refused to pay the fees while Qualcomm refused to pay Apple the $1 billion called for in its agreement.

The company's shares, which closed up 23 percent on Tuesday after the announcement, rose as much as 17 percent on Wednesday, hitting their highest in almost two decades. In 2017, Apple filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Qualcomm for $1 billion. Huawei recently offered to provide 5G modem chips to Apple, but rumours indicated that Huawei could face issues because of its not-so-good-history with the United States government. What's more, they have reached a new royalty agreement as well as inked a new deal for Apple to buy Qualcomm chipsets.

We also saw footage of Carano pulling off some great stunts, and a line from Breaking Bad alum Giancarlo Esposito . An exact release date has yet to be announced, but The Mandalorian will arrive on Disney Plus later this year.

Qualcomm expects incremental earnings per share of $2 as product shipments ramp, the company said. Qualcomm stock has exploded upwards on this guidance, rising 20 percent. It seems like Qualcomm's chips will return to the iPhone.

The two companies started proceedings in a trial in federal court in San Diego on Monday, which was expected to last until May.

One of the most intense high tech legal battle in the recent has now finally come to an end. In March, a U.S. court ruled in Apple's favor, a few hours after a judge of the same court ordered a partial ban of iPhone imports.

His comment comes a day after CNBC published https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/15/cnbc-transcript-ren-zhengfei-huawei-founder-and-ceo.html an interview with Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei that the firm was "open" to selling its 5G chips to Apple.

The news yesterday that the massive, multi-billion dollar legal fight between Apple and chip maker Qualcomm has come to an end has big-time ramifications for Apple - and for the rest of us who use smartphones every day (heck, nearly every minute of every day).
