Iran's top leader appoints new IRGC chief commander

Iran’s Supreme Leader Appoints New Commander for Revolutionary Guards - Reports

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has appointed Hossein Salami, a senior commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), as the new chief commander of the military elite force, promoting him to the rank of major general, Trend reported citing Press TV. Articles appear on euronews.com for a limited time. The wording of the letter appears to suggest Jafari himself requested the change of leadership.

Recently, the Revolutionary Guards Corps has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States.

It said he was appointed based on his experiences and roles in various "revolutionary" and popular activities of the IRGC. Formed shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Guards are estimated to be about 125,000 strong by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

Tehran retaliated by naming the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organization and the US government as a sponsor of terrorism.

Poroshenko admits defeat, ready to congratulate Zelensky on victory
That conflict has claimed nearly 13,000 lives, with at least 3,321 civilian deaths, according to United Nations estimates. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called both Zelensky and Poroshenko on the eve of the run-off vote.

The move takes U.S. policy in the Middle East into uncharted territory, as unlike other groups on the USA terror list the IRGC is effectively a state entity. He is seen as a hardliner who is opposed to the reforms of President Hassan Rowhani, such as the 2015 nuclear deal with the West. The measures wiped 60 percent off the value of Iran's currency, squeezing ordinary Iranians.

Although Iran insists that its ballistic missile program is purely defensive, Salami threatened in November 2017 that if European governments insisted on negotiating over Iran's missile program, Iran would increase the range of the missiles to reach Europe.

In 1978, he was enrolled in the mechanical engineering department at the Iran University of Science and Technology.

Moving against the IRGC could lead to problems for American diplomats and businessmen.
