House Lawmakers Hold First-Ever Hearing Today On Medicare For All

A 2018 Reuters poll found that 70 percent of Americans support Medicare for All

Bernie Sanders singled out insurance and pharmaceutical industry "front group" Partnership for America's Health Care Future in a new editorial for Buzzfeed calling on supporters of Medicare for All legislation to "refuse to back down".

"The transition toward a single-payer system could be complicated, challenging, and potentially disruptive", CBO said.

Sara Collins, vice president of healthcare coverage and access at the Commonwealth Fund, made the provider rate the focal issue of her testimony, noting that finding the proper rate is one of the "critical design issues" of any public plan. Charles N. "Chip" Kahn III, president of the Federation of American Hospitals, called a single-payer system "a high-stakes gamble" asking, "Is it worth the risk of upending health care for every American when the law on the books already contains a road map to universal coverage?"

The House Rules Committee held its first ever hearing Tuesday on the Democrats' Medicare for All bill introduced by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA).

As anticipated, CBO's overview does not consider any particular piece of legislation.

The report deferred on the single-biggest question about single-payer: How much would it cost?

How would the system be financed? CBO touches on that, too, though doesn't provide new details on what such a system would cost.

"Shifting such a large amount of expenditures from private to public sources would significantly increase government spending and require substantial additional government resources", CBO noted in its report.

And in one exchange, Rep. Donna Shalala (D-Fla.), a freshman in Congress but former HHS secretary under President Bill Clinton who hasn't thrown her support behind Medicare for All, stated that private insurers "have been less effective" than the government at controlling costs.

Proponents of Medicare for All say the complexity of the USA system wastes billions in administrative costs and enables hospitals and drugmakers to charge much higher prices than providers get in other economically advanced countries.

Private payments from employers and individuals now cover close to half of the nation's annual $3.5 trillion health care bill.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., also plans to reintroduce his Medicare buy in plan on Wednesday.

Payers, unsurprisingly, are firmly opposed to any plan that disrupts or eliminates their business. The talk sent healthcare stocks tanking.

The planned rally at Bluff Park did not occur, but there were counter-protests that day. According to prosecutors, Domingo said he was willing to become a martyr.

Lawmakers also discussed the at least $32 trillion, 10-year price tag associated with a single-payer system that would shift current health care spending to the government, rather than coverage through private insurance or other programs. It could also encourage investment in preventive care which helps reduce overall healthcare costs.

Single-payer could also produce savings. Democrats' radical plan will rip health care from 158 million Americans.

Despite investor concerns, public support for a single-payer system has grown. The agency said policies that increase provider supply could help mitigate the imbalance.

But he also got to the heart of most observers' skepticism: that Congress won't have the will to throw people off their employer-sponsored health plans. "Clearly something would have to give". They're instead crafting bills to lower prescription drug costs and stabilize and expand coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Ensures coverage for all reproductive services. They hope they can stoke fear of a government takeover of health care that will work to their advantage in the next election.

CBO offered up a few ideas that it says would ease a potential transition for providers.

Medicare-for-all could result in lower administrative costs by eliminating insurers' profits and streamlining certain tasks.

"We mean a complete transformation of our health care system and we mean a system where there are no private insurance companies that provide these core benefits", Jayapal said following the release of her legislation. "But government run, one-size-fits-all health care is not the answer", Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said in a statement to ABC News.

Farzon Nahvi, an emergency room physician in NY, told of patients who had to forego critically needed care, including one with appendicitis, because they could not afford it.

Tuesday, we covered the first Congressional hearing for the Medicare for All bill.

Jayapal's bill, H.R. 1384, is far more generous than that plan or the legislation proposed by Sanders.

Recent polls suggest a majority of Americans support the idea, though support plummets when tradeoffs, such as potential wait times or limits on services and the end of private insurance, are floated.

"Many workers in the health insurance industry would be displaced", CBO said. "It's not a system that's worked well".
