Pompeo to visit Brussels as Europe meets on Iran

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

Alongside the meeting of all 28 foreign ministers, the representatives of Britain, France and Germany - the three European signatories - will meet Mogherini to discuss how to keep the deal going.

"We have differences - each country will protect its own interests and look after its own people - but it's not that we have to be adversaries on every issue", he said.

Forces sent by the USA military to the Middle East include an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers, in a move US officials said was aimed at countering "clear indications" of threats from Iran to American forces in the region.

Mogherini gave a chilly response to news of Pompeo's visit, which she said was only communicated to Brussels at the last minute.

Arriving for a European Union foreign affairs meeting, Hunt told reporters that "We are very anxious about a conflict, about the risk of a conflict happening by accident, with an escalation that is unintended on either side".

"What we need is a period of calm to make sure that everyone understands what the other side is thinking", Hunt said.

Earlier in the day, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed the latest Iranian threats with European allies in Brussels. The Europeans insist the agreement was never meant to address those issues but has been effective in curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions.

He rejected criticism of the deal by top US officials, saying it falls in line with United Nation resolutions on Iran.

Mental Health Week a chance to 'get loud' about wellness
This week marks Mental Health Week and the Canadian Mental Health Association is inviting everybody to get loud for mental health. Now, his mother is taking action in order to help other families and teens suffering from depression and mental illness.

On Ukraine, Pompeo told Lavrov the United States would not recognise Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea and would keep in place economic sanctions imposed on Russian Federation over that move.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian described the remarks suggesting that Iran might renege on the agreement as "very worrying", given that the European Union is still respecting the deal and trying to keep financial supply lines open to Tehran to bolster its economy. "We handed over a memo to the secretary of state".

The official, who was not authorized to preview the trip publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said Pompeo did not necessarily expect the talks to produce any "overnight" breakthroughs and were instead "an opportunity to take the conversation to a higher level". "They have chosen poorly by focusing on threats", Hook said. "No-one wants Iran to come into possession of a nuclear bomb", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said as he arrived.

"I think there is a real concern that escalation is unintended could end up with a much more serious situation", he said.

Maas said the Europeans "are working on the assumption that Iran won't withdraw step by step from this treaty, but rather meet all of its commitments".

Last week, European countries said they wanted to preserve Iran's nuclear deal and rejected "ultimatums" from Tehran, after Iran eased curbs on its nuclear programme and threatened moves that might breach the 2015 global pact. After their meeting, both men said they had been far apart on many issues. A new report is due at the end of May.

Meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier in the day, Pompeo said that Washington would tolerate no interference by Moscow in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
