Trump declares emergency over IT threats

Donald Trump to issue order effectively blocking Huawei from US

President Trump will bar USA wireless carriers from using telecom equipment and products from companies that pose a national security risk, according to a report from Reuters.

Alongside Trump's efforts, Congress previously banned government agencies from using equipment from Huawei, prompting the firm to sue the federal government.

The order doesn't outright ban USA sales by the companies, but would give greater authority to the Commerce Department to review products and purchases by firms connected to adversarial countries, including China.

President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to protect United States computer networks from "foreign adversaries". Huawei has denied the allegations.

The United Kingdom is now deciding how much Huawei equipment it will use for the deployment of its 5G networks.

The person familiar with the order said it would not mention any countries or companies by name.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Wednesday that the United States had been "abusing its national power" to "deliberately smear" Chinese companies, according to Reuters. US officials have said that equipment made by Huawei Technologies Co., a Chinese telecommunications firm, could be used to spy on behalf of the Beijing government.

Uber CEO unflapped by share losses
Thousands of Uber and Lyft drivers turned off their apps in a US-wide strike last week over pay and working conditions. The ability to swap back and forth as a customer is great, but it can be problematic when talking about drivers.

The move would come as relations between the USA and China continue to break down, with the past week having seen both sides ratchet up tariffs.

Huawei rose to prominence by offering cheaper products than competitors, which critics say is possible only through subsidies and other financial incentives from the Chinese government. "Even if we were required by Chinese law, we would firmly reject that.".

China's first worldwide tech brand has steadily expanded into new industry segments, including consumer electronics and consulting services, despite claims from the United States and other governments that Huawei poses a security risk.

The U.S. started a soft ban on Huawei equipment around December 2017, when a group of U.S. lawmakers sent a letter warning about Huawei's role in Chinese "espionage".

The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to deny China Mobile Limited's bid to provide telecommunications services within the U.S. last week. Huawei has said its work does not pose any threat.

The Rural Wireless Association, which represents carriers with fewer than 100,000 subscribers, estimated that one-quarter of its members had Huawei or ZTE equipment in their networks, it said in an FCC filing in December previous year.
