Yesterday was no doubt a significant day at Apple. With the unattainable expectations that investors and board members had bestowed onto Apple, Tim Cook and his team is facing a tough situation where they are forced to fascinate all their stakeholders or suffer dire consequences — a catastrophic loss in company equity. Not only was this event where Apple releases their new phones, it is an event that investors and board members use to measure performance, and the event also provided valuable information where Apple stands on the smartphone battlefield. If Apple releases a product that can do wonders, like cook your breakfast for you, investors will approve of Apple’s actions and consider investing more into Apple. If not, investors will sell their shares in disapproval rage, and then Apple stock prices will tumble down a drain, and the board will be outraged. This anticipated suspense has caught many dazing and wondering what kind of sorcery is Apple is up to. As autumn is just around the corner, a new era is rising at Apple Inc. — the iPhone 6 era. With Tim Cook, the sorcerer cooking up the stew, Jonathan Ive, the knight, carving up the diagram, all the rest of the crew on fire, or behind the scenes, the question is, what was brewing on Apple’s cauldron?
Apple Event: Introduction
This is the first Apple event in history in which Apple has released two phones, and those are, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The stakes rises when Samsung just released the newly announced the Samsung Galaxy S5, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with a screen size of 5.1 inch and 5.7 inches. This is a huge blow to Apple. It shows that Apple is now bowing down to it’s rival, Samsung, who started the large screen display trend. In the past iPhones typically had a screen size of only 4 inches, and the Samsung Galaxy series would have screen sizes of 4 inches and up. After suffering an intense public relations breakdown, has Apple finally decided to join the photocopying technology business? Lets find out.
Apple iPhone 6
The Apple iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch display with a resolution of 750 x 1334 which leaves the phone with a lower resolution than even the one year old HTC One M7. Weighing around 129 grams, the iPhone 6 is really light. As a frame of reference, the iPhone 5 weighed 112 grams. Despite having a larger screen, the iPhone 6 managed to be only 17 grams more. Finally Apple implemented NFC for their new iPhone 6 in order to implement their own version of Visa PayWave, and Mastercard PayPass. Apple called this feature ApplePay, and claims that this form of payment will be more efficient. Interestingly enough, in some parts of the world, Apple knows that the Mastercard allows you to place a sticker on your phone which allows you to pay just as efficiently; thus, eliminating the need for ApplePay. MasterCard calls this feature “Mobile PayPass Tag“.
iPhone 6 also features slow motion video record 720p at 240 frames per second which would intrigue the enthusiast cinematographer. While the previous generation iPhone 5S can shoot at 120 frames per sec, we were hoping that the iPhone 6 could shoot 120 frames per sec at 1080p. Overall, in terms of hardware specifications, the iPhone 6 is lacking in screen resolution for its particular screen size which is disappointing, and shows the public that Apple is not the market leader in the smartphone industry any longer. Has Apple become just a follower? A sheep that needs to be herded by a shepherd? That’s what it appears like with these specifications. One reason why Apple chosen to use a lower resolution display is to conserve battery life. Their website claims that the iPhone 6 can have talk time of up to 14 hours on 3G, a standby time of 10 days, and 11 hours of browsing on the web via WiFi. These figures are not mind-blowing as the HTC One M7 had batteries lasting up to 18 hours of talk time on 3G. With this in mind, we weren’t sure what was so special about the M8 co-processor that Apple was hyping up about. So lets just get this straight, the iPhone 6 will ship with 1.5 year old technology specifications?
Apple iPhone 6+
Next we have the iPhone 6+ which is the phablet version of the iPhone 6. Since this is Apple’s first entry into the phablet market, it will ship with a 5.5 inch 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution screen. Unfortunately, Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy Note 4 has a screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels which leaves the iPhone 6+ specifications, OUTDATED. The next difference between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ is the battery life. The iPhone 6+ has 10 more hours of talk time because there is more room to place more batteries. Now the only key advantage that Apple has to offer for their new iPhone’s is their iOS platform, and software features. Will this stop consumers from substituting Android phones for the iPhones?

Storage and Pricing Strategy
Over the years, flash memory has been decreasing in price due to economy of scale. However, it appear as though Apple does not believe in economic of scale and only marketing, so they decided to make their pricing strategy incredibly cynical. Look below for the iPhone 6 pricing chart:
16 gigabytes of storage is absurdly too little space in today’s tech world. Those who owned 16gb versions of previous iPhones are already complaining about lack of storage space. Furthermore, consumers will be forced to pay $100 premium to purchase the 64GB version to obtain an iPhone that is usable. They might as well have made the 16GB version as an 8GB version just to make it even more apparent that they want your extra $100. Because of this cynical pricing strategy, the actual price of an iPhone 6 is actually $299, or you pay $199 for the trial version.
Overall, the event was quite disappointing. Especially since the live video feed kept cutting out on the masses. To sum up the whole event, the iPhone 6, and 6+ will ship with a year old screen technology, and a dirty marketing scheme that forces consumers to pay $100 more to buy their only usable 64gb version. Not to forget, Apple also announced their new product, the Apple Watch (suprisingly not called the iWatch), which we will cover more in depth later. But the Apple Watch didn’t really have the wow factor we come to know from Apple’s new products and look like it was designed at the last minute. The Moto 360 smartwatch is still ahead of all competitors as the best looking smartwatch. Before we forget, claim your free download of U2’s latest album in the iTunes store. Even if you are not a U2 fan, perhaps this will convince you to be one. Their album, “Songs of Innocence” is free till October 1st.
