iPhone 15 Pro heat reports: the software fix and sensible checks

The iPhone 15 Pro was supposed to earn attention for being a capable phone. Becoming the subject of a very heated discussion was a less charming extra. Its 2023 warmth reports need the documented software response and sensible temperature checks, rather than another confident theory about titanium.

Archive note — revised October 23, 2026: The original post preceded Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 release. This update removes speculative hardware explanations and outdated charging advice, and distinguishes that launch-period issue from a problem on a phone today.

Apple issued a software fix

Apple’s iOS 17 update history says iOS 17.0.3 addressed an issue that could make iPhone run warmer than expected. That is the documented fix for the launch-period issue. It cannot diagnose every later report of a warm device; a phone showing a problem now needs attention to its own circumstances.

First, which kind of warm are we talking about? Apple’s temperature guidance says setup, restoring a backup, demanding apps and charging can make a device warm. Thermal protections may slow charging or dim the display. A temperature warning needs attention. That is the moment to follow the guidance, even if a benchmark is looking terribly eager for another turn.

What to do when a warning appears

If a warning appears, follow Apple’s guidance: switch the device off, move it to a cooler environment away from direct sunlight and let it cool. Avoid a hot car. For persistent or unexpected behaviour, contact Apple Support for assessment of the individual device.

Then give troubleshooting something concrete to work with. Keep the phone and apps on supported updates, note when the behaviour occurs, and distinguish an app or environment from a repeatable device fault. An old headline cannot make that assessment. The internet does enjoy giving a theory its own little victory parade before the evidence arrives.

DeviceCritique’s take

For the 2023 story, the useful reference points are Apple’s documented fix and temperature guidance. A material name or charging-port change does not prove a cause. I would much rather have the actual symptoms, software version and circumstances than a wonderfully dramatic explanation that cannot help the phone. Let the facts have their turn; they have been waiting quite politely.
