NEC unveils LAVIE X14 with a 99.9Wh battery
A laptop that lets you choose a café table for the view, rather than the nearest socket? Oh, that is an attractive little promise. Battery life and carrying weight can make that choice much easier.
Announced in Japan on October 27, the X14 pairs a 99.9Wh battery with an approximately 1,021g body. Japanese sales are planned for October 29, with open retail pricing.
Battery conditions
NEC rates battery life at about 30.1 hours of video playback or 51 hours idle, using JEITA 3.0 measurements. It also says actual runtime varies with settings, apps and the environment.
The published test conditions make the distinction clearer: the video test loops a local file, and the shared settings include an ECO power plan, Bluetooth off and a network connection without internet access.
That is useful context for the shopping list. Your video meetings, browser tabs and cloud syncing deserve their own trial during the return window. A battery benchmark can help you compare claims; it cannot make your particularly demanding Tuesday behave like a looping video. Tuesday has opinions.

Model differences
The retail X1475/NAS uses Core Ultra 7 355. Ports include two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet and microSD.
Those are worth checking against what is already on your desk. Count the devices you plug in each morning before buying a dock out of habit. Our ThinkVision docking-monitor coverage looks at the alternative approach: putting more of the desk’s connections in the display.
Here is the detail to underline: NEC’s user-replaceable battery feature applies only to LAVIE Direct X14 models with Intel Core processors, rather than Core Ultra models.
So keep the full configuration beside the feature you want. A familiar family name can cover different priorities, and a repairability benefit is only useful if it belongs to the machine in your basket. The shopping cart is terribly bad at reading footnotes for you.

Your working day
For a different interpretation of portable Windows computing, our 12-inch Surface Pro coverage puts a tablet-style design on the comparison list. Decide whether you want a conventional laptop on your knees, a pen-focused companion or a machine that mostly lives at a desk.
The real test is whether a laptop makes the routine you already have a little easier. Before choosing one, ask the seller for the exact model’s battery service options, run your usual workload and check the regional support terms. Then, if it suits your day, claim the nice table. The socket can entertain somebody else.
