iBasso AMP19 reaches Japan with two modes for the DX340

A portable music player with interchangeable amplifier cards is already a delightfully committed hobby. Now the iBasso DX340 has another reason to open its little accessories drawer: Japan gets the AMP19 on November 6, according to distributor MUSIN’s October 30 announcement. The tax-inclusive price is ¥48,048.

That is a Japanese release, not a worldwide debut. More importantly, this is an add-on for an existing player, not a complete listening setup. The shopping basket needs a compatibility check before it earns a victory dance.

Who is AMP19 actually for?

MUSIN specifies the DX340 and firmware V1.09 or later; the card cannot operate by itself. iBasso’s official firmware history independently lists AMP19 support in the September 4 V1.09 update. That older date helps explain why the Japanese announcement should not be mistaken for the product’s first appearance anywhere.

For someone who already likes their player’s screen, library and controls, changing one part may be more appealing than replacing the whole thing. For someone starting from a phone and a pair of earbuds, it is a much bigger commitment. Tiny circuit board, surprisingly substantial relationship status.

Two modes, with a very specific power claim

The module offers Nutube 6P1 Tube and Super Class A modes. Treat the distributor’s descriptions of warmth and texture as listening claims, not our verdict: DeviceCritique has not auditioned it.

One specification deserves its conditions attached. The quoted 2,150mW per channel at 32Ω is for the balanced output in Super Class A mode using 12V external DC power. Battery operation in that same mode is rated at 1,000mW per channel.

Here’s the practical bit: a figure for a powered desk setup does not automatically describe the player in your coat pocket. Nor does the biggest number tell you which mode you will prefer. A spec sheet can explain the options; it cannot choose your favourite album’s mood for you.

Before spending the upgrade money

Start with a problem you can name. Is the current setup running out of useful volume with a particular headphone, or are you simply curious about a different presentation? Both are understandable, but they call for different expectations. Curiosity is allowed. It just should not borrow a lab coat and pretend to be necessity.

If you can audition the card, bring the headphones and music you actually use, and compare at similar listening levels. That is a more useful shopping exercise than collecting exciting adjectives from several product pages.

Our audio buying guide can help put the upgrade budget beside complete alternatives. The audio desk covers the wider field. The takeaway: AMP19 is a focused option for DX340 owners; confirm firmware, total cost and the listening benefit you want before adding another beautifully specialized object to the drawer.
