Audio-Technica’s wireless StreamSet reaches Japan

Reaching for something mid-stream should not require negotiating with the cable attached to your head. The cable has no audience. It still insists on being involved.

The ATH-M50xSTS-WL goes on sale in Japan on October 30, following Audio-Technica’s October 28 announcement. This StreamSet headset combines 2.4GHz wireless audio with a condenser boom microphone.

The headset uses 45mm drivers and a cardioid condenser microphone; the pickup pattern focuses on sound from the front.

The interesting part is the workflow: keep the listening and speaking hardware together while freeing the route between your chair and desk. That is a clearer reason to shortlist a wireless headset than expecting the word “studio” to make every recording automatically lovely.

Check the USB connection first

The official specifications list a USB-A transceiver, a USB-C adapter cable and support for Windows 11, macOS Sequoia and macOS Tahoe.

Start with the machine you actually stream from. Check its ports and operating system before moving on to the glamorous business of driver sizes. If you already have a separate microphone, ask whether a headset would simplify your setup enough to justify replacing that arrangement.

Audio-Technica rates continuous wireless use at up to roughly 24 hours and says wired USB use is possible while charging.

Treat that figure as a manufacturer rating, then plan where the charging cable would run during a session. A wireless purchase is more enjoyable when its emergency wired arrangement is boringly practical. Our music-creation guide helps put the recording side of a desk into context.

The microphone and your ears have different jobs

The microphone flips up to mute. Its noise-reduction feature processes the captured voice; it is not a claim of active noise cancellation for the wearer.

That distinction matters in a shared room. Ask for a sample of the outgoing microphone feed rather than judging it by how quiet the headset feels on your own head. Listen for what happens to words during background noise, not just whether the noise gets softer.

The physical mute is also worth trying: can you reach it without watching yourself in a preview? The best control is the one you can find when somebody off camera asks where the scissors live.

This Japanese release does not establish Canadian pricing or availability, and this is not a hands-on review. Compare alternatives in our audio buying guide. Put connection compatibility and a convincing voice sample at the top of the shortlist; let the cable enjoy its unexpected retirement after that.
