Kinoko-no-Yama Pro earbuds seek a crowdfunding comeback

Some earbuds try to look invisible. These appear to have wandered out of the snack cupboard with a charging cable and a surprisingly serious business plan. If your ideal gadget combines a small daily pleasure with an excuse to smile at your own bag, well, the mushroom delegation would like a word.

A conditional comeback

Kagomedia announced the new Meiji-licensed Kinoko-no-Yama Wireless Earphone Pro on October 26. The Makuake campaign runs from noon Japan time November 1 through December 13, with production conditional on at least 1,000 backed units.

That condition belongs near the top of the story, before anyone starts arranging a space on the desk. This is a proposal seeking enough support to be made. A campaign opening date is an invitation to participate; it does not mean a finished pair will arrive next week. The charming case has not acquired the power to hurry a factory.

Planned Japanese pricing is ¥36,300 including tax. A ¥29,800 reward covers the first 1,000 units in the first 24 hours, ending earlier if claimed. Shipping is planned from mid-March 2027 onwards; general retail sales remain undecided.

For a collector, the appeal is easy to understand. A charging case already spends much of its life sitting on a table, so making it enjoyable to look at is a perfectly reasonable design ambition. It is also worth deciding whether you want the collectible, the listening device or both. Each answer gives you a different reason to spend.

Beyond the packaging

The Pro version adds foam tips and changes touch sensors, audio tuning and case power saving, according to the company. Those are manufacturer claims; we have not tested the earbuds.

The practical checks are wonderfully ordinary, even when the object looks this cheerful. Read the campaign’s delivery and support terms, check where the seller will ship and find out how servicing works in your country. If you need earphones for an imminent trip, shop around the trip’s actual date. A future treat and tomorrow’s travel kit occupy different spaces in the calendar.

Fit deserves the same attention as the costume. An earbud still has to sit comfortably in your ear, and a delightful photograph cannot settle that question. Consider how you normally listen, how often you take calls and whether controls matter more to you than the pleasure of opening the case.

If you are still choosing a listening format, our open-ear versus ANC guide offers a useful starting point. For a simple plug-in alternative, Green House’s USB-C earbuds put the focus on connection and everyday convenience.

The issuer announcement and campaign page are the places to check before committing. Enjoy the whimsy, then give the terms their moment. Even a very cute mushroom has paperwork.
