Panasonic W97C brightness findings show why the test window matters

AV Watch published Panasonic W97C measurements on October 27, following testing in late August. Its 65-inch TV-65W97C reached 4,778 cd/m² on a 10% HDR window in Cinema Pro mode.

That is an attention-grabbing number. It also arrives carrying some small print that deserves a chair at the table. Before a brightness figure talks you into rearranging the living room, look at how much of the screen was lit and which picture preset was doing the work. The television can be impressive; the number still needs its name tag.

Keep the picture mode beside the number

AV Watch’s separate Dynamic HDR measurements recorded 4,467 cd/m² at 10% and 1,199 cd/m² at 100%. Those are the same-mode figures to compare. The publication reset televisions, disabled sensors, used default picture parameters without calibration, and selected the best repeated readings.

A 10% window lights a tenth of the image area; a full-screen white pattern fills the whole thing. That distinction is useful because a small bright highlight and a large bright scene ask different questions. A sparkling reflection is one kind of visual flourish. A broad expanse of snow is quite another assignment, thank you very much.

Brightness deserves more than one test

VESA’s DisplayHDR criteria separately list an 8% centre-patch test, a full-screen flash test and a full-screen long-time test. That is a different procedure from AV Watch’s measurements, but it illustrates why area and duration belong beside a luminance result.

For a shopping comparison, keep those conditions together instead of collecting the largest figure from each review. Ask for the picture mode, pattern size and whether the result describes a short burst or a sustained measurement. Then compare like with like. A missing condition is a reason to keep reading, rather than an invitation to fill the gap with optimism.

Panasonic’s original Japanese announcement identifies W97C as its Mini LED 4K LCD flagship, with 55-, 65- and 75-inch sizes. It was announced in May for a July rollout. Today’s development is the publication of independent findings, rather than a new television launch.

The practical takeaway is to bring your viewing habits back into the discussion. Think about the material you watch, your room and the preset you would actually choose. Brightness is a useful part of that conversation, alongside the rest of the picture.
