Google Genie 4 makes AI worlds interactive, with access still limited

An AI video can show you a lovely little world. The next temptation is obvious: let me poke it. Preferably without the entire landscape responding like a confused stage extra.

Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on October 27: an AI world model that lets users steer generated scenes in real time, with native audio and interactive dialogue.

The interesting part happens after the first image

A pretty opening shot is easy to admire and hard to interrogate. An interactive scene asks a more awkward question: does the place still make sense when you change your mind? That is where this kind of tool becomes interesting for people planning an experience, rather than simply collecting handsome clips.

Imagine you are sketching an atmosphere for a project. Your useful question might be whether a space feels welcoming, whether a viewpoint tells the story, or whether a change in mood deserves more development. A rough visual conversation could help you choose an idea before you build the real thing. It should still be treated as a sketch.

Here is the access catch

Access is a trusted-tester research preview. Google says Project Genie for Google AI Ultra subscribers and early access through the Gemini API and AI Studio are coming soon.

That is a reason to watch the rollout, not a reason to purchase a plan on the assumption that a new feature will be waiting at checkout. Wait for a clear access notice covering your account and region. A subscription bought for a promise is a slightly expensive form of wishful thinking.

If access eventually reaches you, start with one small question. Try a single scene and a single change, then note what stayed stable and what became strange. Compare attempts rather than choosing only the most flattering result. Otherwise the demo reel quietly becomes your research department, and it has terrible conflict-of-interest policies.

A convincing scene still needs a reality check

DeepMind warns that details and object permanence can drift, while physics, text and audio accuracy remain research challenges. It says generated video and audio include SynthID.

For a practical evaluation, decide what would count as failure before you start. Would an object changing shape ruin your prototype? Would unclear speech make the scene unusable? Would you need the same action to behave consistently across several attempts? A tool can be delightful and still miss the requirement that matters to your project.

Keep the images in perspective, too. These are Google’s AI-generated demonstrations, not our tests. They show what Google chose to present. They cannot establish how reliable an everyday session will be.

The useful takeaway: enjoy the possibility of wandering through an idea, then make the tool answer a boring, specific question. The dream castle can wait until it remembers where it put the door.
